How to make an Upcycled Herb Planter!

Don’t have enough garden space, or any garden space at all? Well, you can make a planter out of just about anything if you use your imagination! These planters can be places on a patio, porch steps or really anywhere that you can fit them! I’m going to tell you about a planter that I made from something that was going to be thrown out in the trash. Crazy right? One man’s trash really is another man’s (or woman’s ;]) treasure!!

Moving on to the story: While I was at work, I came across some raised wooden boxes that were set out in the hallway to be thrown in the dumpster. They had been used to ship and deliver purification columns (I work for a Biotech company) so they had sharpie writing, shipping labels and stickers stuck to them. As soon as I saw those boxes I knew that I had to take them home and use them as planters!

Here are the quick and easy steps that I followed to covert these wooden shipping containers into herb planters. You can follow the same steps, as appropriate, for practically any container that you can find or have on hand!

  1. Remove stickers and use sandpaper to get rid of any residue and marker that is on the wood

  2. Sand down any parts of the wood that are splintered

  3. Stain or paint the container for some flare if you’d like!

  4. Fill the bottom of the container with a think layer of rocks to help with drainage

  5. Fill the rest of the container with soil

  6. Finally, plant your herbs!

You can plant whatever herbs or plants that you’d like. I’ve also used this container to grow pepper plants.

We’d love to hear about other containers and objects that you’ve upcycled into planters - share your experience in the comments!
